Prince's visit to Sunbury generated huge interest

There was quite a buzz around the clubhouse last Thursday when The Prince of Wales paid a visit to Sunbury CC to spend time with Surplus to Supper and learn about their work bridging the gap between food waste and food poverty across Surrey and West London.

The visit generated huge worldwide media interest as this was Prince Williams’ first public event since his wife Kate announced she is being treated for cancer.

Members will be well aware of the great contribution Surplus make to the life of the club providing food in the evenings and, of course, their award-winning cricket teas during the summer months. They also run the popular ‘shop' for fresh produce which attracts queues of local residents every weekend.

However, these are sidelines compared to the main work that Surplus carry out. For 363 days of the year Surplus prepare, cook and pot meals for distribution within the community using surplus food donated by supermarkets and other organisations. For the past four years they have produced around 1000 meals a week in our kitchen.

It was a rare sunny day when the Prince visited and the club and grounds looked at their best. William was very impressed with the set up at Sunbury, the number of adult and Junior teams we support and how we are organically growing our girls section in order to create our first women’s team in the near future.
