Sunbury CC Player Profiles - Redders

Sunbury CC Player Profiles - Redders

Rajan Soni21 Apr 2020 - 09:19

Good looking, head of hair, right foot of Ronaldo and left foot of Messi? Our guest today has none of those, but find out about our own Sam Burgess!

Full Name:
Samuel Burgess

Age:
23

Favourite Shot:
Backfoot Punch

Your First Sunbury Memory:
Believe it or not, I was actually a Twickenham colt! I was 9/10, playing for West Middlesex under John Ventham, and opening the batting on the top square at Sunbury, I scored 52* off 30 overs! I knew then I wanted to play all my cricket at this place!

Your Best Sunbury Memory:
Can't look past beating Leatherhead at home to win the league for the first time together! Looking around at your best mates being champions is unbeatable...we celebrated for days! I do always look back at Smudge running trough the Moles with 9-8 and smile also!

What's the Best Sunbury Innings you've ever seen:
Adam London v Sutton at home. Batting at 3, he was 120* batting with 9/10 at the end, pulling Dan Douthwaite off his nose in pitch black?! It was sensational.

Who do you think has had the biggest impact on your game and why:
My dad. He has put an incredible amount of time and effort into me and Tommy - it is incredibly understanding!

What do you think sets Sunbury apart? What does this club have that others don't:
At Sunbury, it's more than just cricket. I have made my best friendships here that will last a lifetime - and you also get to see Kev Smith in his Lonsdale Y fronts every weekend - what more do you want?

What's one piece of advice you have for a Sunbury colt coming through:
I was always told, just enjoy it and don't be too hard on yourself! Still push yourself, work harder than everyone else and train under pressure, but always enjoy it! That's the best way to improve!

Right now onto what everyone has been waiting for Burge - a bit about your mates at Sunbury! Who's the best player your favourite player to bat with:
John Maunders. Growing up and watching him in awe, to have opened the batting with him for the last 5 years has been awesome. He is so calm at the crease (if he hasn't done his hammy) and is a genuine treat to watch.

Favourite Player to sit next to in the dressing room:
Robbie Hughes. He's been my best mate since I was colt, so whenever we get to play together these days is always special! To be fair as long as I am clear of Sowt's (Conor Fulton's) kit bag and Terrance's (Alex Hughes') chat I'm pretty happy!

Being an entertaining batsman yourself, who's the most entertaining batsman to watch at the club:
Linky Sharma...could be a golden duck one week and a 100 off 50 in the next. You never know what's coming and it's great to watch!

Who's got the worst lid at the club:
Raj you can't be doing me dirty on my own player profile - that would be me I'm afraid.

Worst chat at the club:
Alex Hughes - absolute nightmare when you're waiting to bat and planted next to him - facing the first ball of the game sleepy is not ideal!

Great to hear from Sam this week! Stay tuned for more upcoming profiles, as well as some upcoming cricket drills from our Head of Cricket, John Maunders!
