13 year old spins Sunbury 4th XI to victory...

5th May 2012
Sunbury CC v Wimbledon CC - Surrey Premier Division 4th XI R1

The bottom square hosted an enthralling 4th XI fixture on this day 8 years ago, as the Dons made the trip down to Sunbury for week one of the 2012 4th XI Surrey Championship.

Captain Nobby Clarke lost the toss and Sunbury were put in to bat - it looked to be the right choice from the Wimbledon captain, as only Winston Vereender (31) and Amar Virdi (27) surpassed 15. James Birch (13*) was left stranded after 43 overs, as Sunbury posted a disappointing 123/10.

However, as is the Sunbury way, the 4th XI never gave up. Early wickets for both Birch and Clarke pegged Wimbledon back, but a strong 4th wicket partnership developed and threatened to take the game away from Sunbury. Alas, up stepped 13 year old Virdi, who spun his way to a supreme spell of 5-22, his second ever 5-wicket haul in the Surrey Championship, as Wimbledon fell 13 runs short, at 110/10.

This game was to be Virdi's final game in the 4th XI, and his meteoric rise through the XIs at Sunbury and beyond, had well and truly begun.
